A key pillar to Africa’s growth
One of our key objectives at Biovac is to strengthen the pharmaceutical and healthcare environment in South Africa and Africa, by contributing consciously and responsibly to the socio-economic transformation of our society.
We view transformation in terms of:
Our Economy
Biovac is proud to be part of the much-needed economic transformation to address South Africa’s legacies. Our aim is to address historic inequities through our ownership structures as well as through enterprise development.
Our bio-economy
South Africa’s Bio-economic Strategy envisions that biotechnology will become a significant growth area and contributor to our Gross Domestic Product. As the only manufacturer of vaccines for human use in Southern Africa, we are committed to realising this vision by participating in the bio-economic ecosystem with other companies, research centres, universities and commercial partners.
Our people
The continent’s political and economic history has resulted in loss of skills and imbalances in the distribution of skills within our society. We are determined to address skills shortages and imbalances through our extensive skills development program, and in so doing, secure our future.
Our Society
Immunisation is one of the most successful and cost-effective public health interventions. Immunisation programmes have resulted in eradication of smallpox, elimination of measles and poliomyelitis in large areas of the world and substantial reductions in other childhood diseases, such as diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis. Vaccines are an essential tool in global efforts to meet the United Nations’ Millennium Development Goals – in particular, the goal to reduce deaths among children under five years of age. We are proud to be part of these disease prevention initiatives and global immunisation efforts.
